Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin anagnosticus; Greek ἀναγνωστικός.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anagnosticus (1548 or earlier; compare anagnosticum (noun) epistle, decree (6th cent.)), or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἀναγνωστικός capable of reading, fond of reading, already in ancient Greek in the sense ‘suitable for reading’ < ἀναγνώστης anagnost n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier anagnost n.
Obsolete.
A person employed to read aloud; esp. one who reads the lessons or other parts of the service in a church; = anagnost n.
