Etymology: (? < French exorcise-r,) < late Latin exorcizāre, < Greek ἐξορκίζειν, < ἐξ out + ὅρκος oath. ‘Owing perhaps to association with exercise, the spelling -ise is now almost universal; the better form exorcize is marked in most dictionaries as obsolete’ (N.E.D., 1894).
1. transitive. To drive away (an evil spirit) by the invocation or use of some holy name; to call forth, expel. Const. from, out of.
