Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek εὐροκλύδων.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek εὐροκλύδων (if genuine, only in Acts 27:14, where the better attested reading is εὐρακύλων : see euraquilo n.) < ancient Greek εὖρος east wind (see eurus n.) + κλύδων wave, billow (see klydonograph n.).
In the Bible (Acts 27:14): a stormy, north-easterly wind encountered by St Paul on his journey to Rome. Hence allusively: any stormy wind or gale. Also figurative. Cf. euraquilo n.
