Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: eugenesis n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < eugenesis n. + -ic suffix, after French eugénésique (1860 in the passage translated in quot. 1864).The term was introduced by French anthropologist Paul Broca (1824–80) in order to support his (now discredited) belief that human races were of independent origin and might be too genetically distinct to produce fully fertile hybrids.
Biology (now historical).
Designating or relating to organisms of hybrid or mixed origin that display unimpaired fertility. Cf. paragenesic adj. and dysgenesic adj. at dys- prefix .
