Etymology: < French exigeant (18th cent.), use as adjective of present participle of exiger to demand (see exigent n.2 and adj.).Not fully naturalized in English. N.E.D. (1894) only gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (ęksiʒaṅ) /ɛksiʒɑ̃/.
