Etymology: Variant of attercop n. (compare variants and forms in the Germanic languages cited at atter n.).The β. forms show metanalysis (see N n.). The form ettercapper apparently shows suffixation in -er suffix1. Forms in -crap show remodelling of the final syllable after crop n. II. The form nettercrab shows further remodelling of the final syllable, apparently after crab n.1
