Etymology: < (i) Middle French anomal (of a verb, a language) irregular (1530 in Palsgrave), that deviates from the rule or from usual practice (1546), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin anomalus irregular (from 4th cent. in grammarians), (of planets) varying in size (5th cent.) < ancient Greek ἀνώμαλος irregular, uneven, in Hellenistic Greek in grammar, with reference to diversity of construction < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ὁμαλός even (see homalographic adj.).Compare Spanish anómalo (c1550), Italian anomalo (1516). With use as noun compare post-classical Latin anomalum (neuter) irregular grammatical form (4th cent.).
