Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ēvigilāt-, ēvigilāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin ēvigilāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of ēvigilāre to wake up, to keep watch throughout the night, to stay awake through (a night), to study (something) with careful attention, in post-classical Latin also to waken (a person), to waken (a person) from death (4th cent.) < ē- e- prefix2 + vigilāre to watch (see vigilate v.). Compare earlier evigilation n.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
transitive. To watch, monitor, or study (something) carefully.
