Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin ēthologus ; Greek ἠθολόγος , -ist suffix; ethology n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: Originally (in sense 1) < (i) classical Latin ēthologus or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἠθολόγος ( < ancient Greek ἦθος character (see ethos n.) + -λογος : see -logist comb. form) + -ist suffix. In later use independently (iii) < ethology n. + -ist suffix.
