Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἦθος , -graphy comb. form.

Etymology: < ancient Greek ἦθος character (see ethos n.) + -graphy comb. form, after French éthographie (1787 in the passage translated in quot. 1793) or its model post-classical Latin ethographia (1606 or earlier). Compare ancient Greek ἦθογράϕος, post-classical Latin ethographus (a1515) painter of character, moralist.

Depiction or description of human character, manners, or feelings, especially in respect of morality; an instance of this.
