Etymology: < Latin anōdyn-us (Celsus, etc.), < Greek ἀνώδυν-ος painless, < ἀν priv. + ὀδύνη pain (see -odynia comb. form). Compare French anodin -e (16th cent. in Littré), whence also the obsolete English spelling in -in, -ine.
