单词 everyman
释义

Everymann.

Brit. /ˈɛvrᵻman/, U.S. /ˈɛv(ə)riˌmæn/
Inflections: Plural Everymen.
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Everyman.
Etymology: < the name of Everyman, the leading character in an early 16th-cent. morality play ( < every adj. + man n.1).The anonymous play was probably written between c1509 and c1519, and its first printed edition dates from c1528. The title Everyman does not appear in contemporary editions; it appears to have been first used in the half-title of a 1773 reprint of the 1528 edition. Most scholars now agree that the English morality play is an adaptation of the Middle Dutch late 15th-cent. morality play Elckerlijc, lit. ‘every person’. Compare German jedermann everybody (early 15th cent.); Jedermann is the title of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's 1911 adaptation of the English play.
(A name for) an ordinary or typical human being. During the 20th cent., various books and series were published for the mass market incorporating the name ‘Everyman’, notably Everyman's Library (from 1906).
