Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἔθνος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἔθνος nation (see ethnic n. and adj.); compare -o- connective. Compare Byzantine Greek ἐθνο- , combining form (in e.g. ἐθνόμυθος mythological) of ἔθνος , and Hellenistic Greek ἐθνάρχης ethnarch n. Compare also German ethno- (formations in which are found from the second half of the 18th cent.), French ethno- (formations in which are found from the second half of the 18th cent.).Apparently attested earliest in the second half of the 18th cent. in the French adaptation ethnology n. Formations within English are found from the first half of the 19th cent., e.g. ethnographer n.
Used in words relating to the study of peoples or cultures, prefixed to (a) combining forms (as ethnography n., ethnology n., etc.), and (b) nouns (as ethnobotany n., ethnopsychology n., etc.), or derivatives of these.
