单词 ethionic
释义

ethionicadj.

Brit. /ˌiːθɪˈɒnɪk/, U.S. /ˌiθiˈɑnɪk/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: ether n., -thionic comb. form.
Etymology: < e- (in ether n.) + -thionic comb. form, after French éthionique (in acide éthionique, G. Magnus 1833, in Ann. de chim. et de phys. 52 159).French éthionique is itself after post-classical Latin -oenothionicum in prot-oenothionicum , deut-oenothionicum , and trit-oenothionicum , which derive respectively < ancient Greek πρωτο- proto- comb. form, post-classical Latin deuto- deuto- comb. form, and ancient Greek τριτο- trito- comb. form + οἶνος wine (see oeno- comb. form) + θεῖον sulphur (see thio- comb. form) + post-classical Latin -icum -ic suffix. These were introduced by F. W. Sertürner ( Ann. der Physik (1818) 60, pages 54, 57, and 58 respectively) to designate three acids, one of which Magnus supposed to have been identical with ethionic acid. Compare German Aethionsäure ethionic acid (1833; after French).
Chemistry.
1. ethionic acid n. an acidic compound, known only in solution, produced by the action of water on carbyl sulphate (ethionic anhydride); cf. isethionic acid at isethionic adj.Ethionic acid is a sulphate ester of isethionic acid, to which it is readily converted by hydrolysis; HO3SOCH2CH2SO3H.

1834 tr. G. Magnus in Dublin Jrnl. Med. & Chem. Sci. 4 139 If we reject these names, we might take the Greek θεῖον which means sulphur, and οἶνος, wine, to form from it, after the example of Sertuerner, the names œnothic (sulphovinic) [acid], or œnothionic, etherothionic, or ethionic; and, in fine, isethionic or isetherothionic.
1844 G. Fownes Man. Elem. Chem. 396 When a solution of ethionic acid is boiled, it is decomposed into sulphuric acid, and a second new acid, the isethionic.
1917 Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. 39 461 There is a very slow formation of ethyl sulfate (or isethionic or ethionic acid), as evidenced by a loss of 4% of the acidity in 3 weeks.
2002 U. Lüttge in A. Läuchli & U. Lüttge Salinity vi. 129 Isethionic acid is..formed by direct reaction of ethylene with SO3 and subsequent hydrolysis of the ethionic acid.
2. ethionic anhydride n. now rare = carbyl sulphate n. at carbyl n. Compounds.

1857 W. A. Miller Elements Chem. III. 145 Olefiant gas combines readily with anhydrous sulphuric acid, producing a compound which may be regarded as ethionic anhydride.
1890 J. M. Thomson & A. G. Bloxam Bloxam's Chem. (ed. 7) 479 The compound formed by SO3 with ethylene..is termed carbyl sulphate or ethionic anhydride.
