Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin annus horribilis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin annus horribilis (1654 or earlier), lit. ‘dreadful year’ < classical Latin annus year (see annals n.) + horribilis horrible adj., after annus mirabilis annus mirabilis n. Compare earlier annus mirabilis n.
A disastrous or particularly unpleasant year. Cf. annus mirabilis n.Usage of the term increased significantly after Queen Elizabeth II used it in a 1992 speech marking the 40th Anniversary of her succession (see quot. 1992).
