Etymology: Originally (in sense 1) < ether n. + -ized suffix, after French éthérisé (in this sense, J. R. Deiman et al. 1794, in Jrnl. de physique 2 255; 1758 or earlier in sense ‘containing ether (ether n. 3a)’); compare later etherize v. 2. In later use independently < etherize v. + -ed suffix1.
