Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ether n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < ether n. + -ism suffix. In sense 2 perhaps after French éthérisme (1847 or earlier in this sense; 1833 or earlier denoting a theory which claims that all things originated as modifications of ether (ether n. 3a)).
1. The (supposed) agency of the ether (ether n. 3a) in psychic and mental phenomena. Obsolete. rare.

2. Medicine. The state of anaesthesia created by the administration of ether; administration of ether for this purpose. Obsolete.
