Etymology: < exfoliate v. + -or suffix. With sense 1 compare French trépan exfoliateur (1830 or earlier), and also the more common trépan exfoliatif (see exfoliative adj.).
1. Surgery. A trepan, or attachment for a trepan, used to remove bone in layers. rare. Now historical.

2. A furnace used to heat vermiculite and other minerals with a laminar structure in order to convert water trapped between their layers into steam, causing rapid expansion of the mineral. Also: an industrial plant in which such a process is carried out.
