单词 exequy
释义

exequyn.

/ˈɛksɪkwi/
Forms: α. singular Middle English–1600s exequie, exequy, 1600s, exquie. β. plural Middle English exequises, exeqwyis, exquies) 1500s exequeis, Middle English– exequies.
Etymology: < Old French exequies, exeques = Provençal ex(s)equias , < Latin ex(s)equiās , accusative of exsequiae plural, lit. ‘train of followers’, < exsequī to follow out, follow to the grave (see execute v.). The Old French word, on adoption into English, was treated partly as a singular (compare plural form exequises), and partly as a plural; from the latter of which the singular exequy was afterwards developed.⁋An alleged sense, ‘a funeral ode’, has been inferred from the title of a poem ‘The Exequy’ in Bishop H. King Poems (1657) 52.
Funeral rites; funeral ceremony; occasionally in sense of ‘funeral train’ or ‘bier’.
a. singular; with plural in sense ‘funerals’. Obsolete.
