Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin exemplī grātiā.
Etymology: < classical Latin exemplī grātiā by way of example < exemplī , genitive singular of exemplum example n. + grātiā for the sake of, use as preposition of ablative singular of grātia (see grace n.). Compare earlier exempli causa adv.
Now chiefly literary.
For example, for instance. Also: in order to provide an example or examples; for the sake of example. Cf. exempli causa adv.Frequently in abbreviated form: see e.g. adv. at E n.1 Initialisms, exemp. gratia adv., ex. gr. adv.; e.g. is by far the most common.
