Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin exemplatum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin exemplatum object formed after an ideal exemplar (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources; also 13th cent. in British sources in sense ‘copy’), use as noun of neuter past participle of exemplare exemplate v. Compare earlier exemplar n. 1b(a), and also exemplate v.
Philosophy and Theology. rare before 20th cent.
Something that is modelled on or derives from an archetypal exemplar (exemplar n. 1b(a)).
