Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French anuller, adnuller, annuller, annuler (French annuler ) to render (an act, contract, etc.) void, to invalidate (1289 in Old French; early 13th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation in the sense ‘to despise’), to eliminate, to reduce to nothing (14th cent.), to abolish (c1420) < post-classical Latin annullare , adnullare to reduce to nothing, annihilate, destroy (Vetus Latina), to invalidate (7th cent.) < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix + nūllus no (see null adj.).Compare Old Occitan annullar, anullar (end of the 13th cent.), Catalan anullar (1357), Spanish anular (1386), Portuguese anular (1402), Italian annullare (c1324).
