Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French annuaire (adjective) taking place every year (1555), (noun) yearbook, almanac (late 18th cent.), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin annuarius lasting for a year (5th cent.), responsible for annuary masses (1405 in a British source) < classical Latin annus year (see annals n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1.Compare Italian annuario (noun) annual publication recording the year's published work on a particular subject, yearbook (1809). With use as adjective compare earlier annual adj.
