Primary stress is often attracted to the first syllable of this suffix, but in some cases may be retained by a preceding element without reducing the first vowel of the suffix. See e.g. peduncle n.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French -uncle; Latin -unculus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French -uncle (also -oncle ), suffix forming nouns, and its etymon (ii) classical Latin -unculus, -uncula, -unculum (in e.g. carbunculus carbuncle n., portiuncula portiuncle n., caprunculum capruncle n.), formed by adding the suffix -culus -culus suffix, -cula -cula suffix, or -culum -culum suffix to n -stem nouns. Compare -cle suffix.Attested earliest in loans from Latin (in Old English in carbuncle n., and subsequently from the late 15th cent., in e.g. portiuncle n.), and from the 16th cent. also in loans from French (e.g. escarbuncle n.). New formations within English are rare; the earliest example of such a formation is consciuncle n. (late 16th cent.).
Forming nouns denoting usually small examples of the thing denoted by the first element, as oratiuncle n., passiuncle n., pseudonymuncle n., etc.The quots. below show ad hoc formations.
