Etymology: < post-classical Latin anacoluthon (from 3rd cent. in grammarians) < ancient Greek ἀνακόλουθον , neuter of ἀνακόλουθος inconsequent, in Hellenistic Greek also (in grammar) anomalous < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἀκόλουθος following (see acolyte n.).Compare French anacoluthe (1751). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ:năkoliū·þǫ̆n) /ˌænəkəʊˈl(j)uːθən/.
