Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French entresigne sign, token, (in plural) armorial bearings (all late 12th cent. in Old French) < entre- enter- prefix + signe sign n.Compare Old Occitan entresenh (12th cent.). Compare also post-classical Latin intersignium, intersignum sign made in the middle (of a discussion) (6th cent.), token, countersign (frequently from late 12th cent. in British sources), blazon (13th cent.).
Obsolete (historical in later use).
