Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French entrelacs.
Etymology: < French entrelacs (plural unchanged) decorative embellishment consisting of interlaced motives (12th cent. in Old French as entrelaz , antrelas ; 1671 in architecture), probably < entrelacer interlace v., with remodelling after lacs cord, rope (see lace n.).In French the final -cs is silent; the English pronunciation appears to be a spelling pronunciation. The β. forms apparently arose as an inferred singular within English, although a singular entrelac is sporadically attested in French from at least the 19th cent.
1. A decorative pattern intended to resemble intricately interlaced cords, ribbons, etc. Cf. strapwork n. at strap n. Compounds 2.
