Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French entrechat.
Etymology: < French entrechat (1609) < Italian intrecciato , adjective (1605 or earlier in a dancing context in capriola intrecciata ), use as adjective of past participle of intrecciare to interlace, to entwine (14th cent.) < in- in- prefix3 + treccia tress n.The rare form entrechant perhaps shows alteration by association with either -ant suffix1 or French chant chant n. N.E.D. (1891) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (āṅtr'ʃa) /ɑ̃trʃa/.
Ballet.
A vertical jump in which the dancer crosses the feet repeatedly while in the air, sometimes also striking them together.Also with postpositive French numeral indicating the number of times the feet are crossed, counting each crossing as two movements of the feet, e.g. entrechat quatre (six, etc.): an entrechat in which the dancer crosses the feet two (three, etc.) times.
