Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French anacampseros; French anacampsérote; Latin anacampserōt-, anacampserōs.
Etymology: In α. forms (i) < Middle French anacampseros (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny; French †anacampséros subsequently from mid 18th cent.) and its etymon (ii) classical Latin anacampserōs (see below). In β. forms < (iii) Middle French, French anacampsérote (1553 in Rabelais) and its etymon (ii) classical Latin anacampserōt-, anacampserōs (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀνακαμψέρωτ- , ἀνακαμψέρως herb said to bring back love (Plutarch) < ancient Greek ἀνακάμπτειν to bend back ( < ἀνα- ana- prefix + κάμπτειν to bend: see phonocamptic adj.) + ἔρως love (see Eros n.).In the 18th cent. the classical Latin word was adopted into scientific Latin as Anacampseros, the name of two separate genera of plants (P. Miller (1754) and Linnaeus (1758)), with the Linnaean name persisting in modern use for a genus of succulent perennials native to South Africa.
Chiefly historical. Now rare.
A plant believed to have the power to restore lost love.
