Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anabaptismus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anabaptismus (1529 or earlier: see note) < Byzantine Greek ἀναβαπτισμός rebaptizing, rebaptism < ancient Greek ἀνά- ana- prefix + Hellenistic Greek βαπτισμός baptism n.; compare Byzantine Greek ἀναβαπτίζειν anabaptize v. Compare earlier Anabaptist n.Compare Middle French, French anabaptisme doctrine or practice of the Anabaptists (1564). Compare also Dutch wederdoop (1529), German Wiedertaufe , feminine (see rebaptism n.), †Wiedertauf, masculine (1525 or earlier), all in the sense ‘action or practice of baptizing a person again, second baptism’. Post-classical Latin anabaptismus was formerly read at Augustine Enarrationes in Psalmos 38, but modern editions read anabathmi, plural of anabathmos step.
Christian Church.
1. The doctrine or practices of the Anabaptists. In early use also: †the belief that baptism should be administered only to people old enough to fully understand the sacrament (obsolete).
