Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German an sich.
Etymology: < German an sich (1716), probably short for an sich selbst by or in itself or themselves, per se (c1510) < an by (see on prep.) + sich , 3rd person reflexive pronoun (singular and plural) + selbst self pron., originally borrowed in uses relating to the philosophy of Hegel and Kant (compare Ding an sich n.). Compare earlier per se adv.
