Etymology: < post-classical Latin epistolare (from 13th cent. in British sources; from 14th cent. in continental sources), use as noun of neuter of classical Latin epistolāris epistolar adj. Compare post-classical Latin epistolarium (from 11th cent. in British sources; from 12th cent. in continental sources), use as noun of neuter of epistolarius epistolary adj., and also Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French epistolier , French (now archaic) épistolier (c1250 in Old French). Compare pisteler n. 2.In quot. 1618 perhaps alternatively reflecting an otherwise unattested Middle English epistolarie , noun (compare pistelarie n.).
