Etymology: < post-classical Latin epistemonicus (5th or 6th cent. in Boethius; < ancient Greek ἐπιστημονικός capable of knowledge, of or for science, scientific < ἐπιστήμων knowing, wise, acquainted with, having scientific knowledge of ( < ἐπιστάναι to know, understand (see episteme n.) + -μων , suffix forming adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix) + -al suffix1.
Philosophy. rare.
Capable of becoming known or understood.
