Etymology: Old English earn, corresponding to Middle Low German arn (Dutch arend), Old Norse ǫrn strong masculine < Old Germanic *arnu-z. Old Germanic had also a synonymous *aron- weak masculine, whence Old High German aro (Middle High German are, modern German aar), Old Norse ari, Gothic ara. Compare Old Church Slavonic orilŭ, Lithuanian erelis eagle, Greek ὄρνις bird.
An eagle; in modern use chiefly the golden eagle or the sea-eagle (see eagle n. 1).
