单词 erming
释义

ermingn.1

Forms:

α. early Old English ierming, early Old English irming, Old English ermingc (rare), Old English yrmincg, Old English yrming, Old English (chiefly non-West Saxon)–early Middle English erming, early Middle English eremig (probably transmission error), early Middle English ermigges (plural, transmission error), early Middle English ermyng.

β. Old English earmincg, Old English earmingc, Old English earminge (perhaps transmission error), Old English eorming (Kentish), Old English–early Middle English earming, early Middle English arming, early Middle English ærming, early Middle English earmyng.

Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch arminc , erminc , Old High German arming (in an isolated attestation), Old Icelandic armingi , all in sense ‘poor creature, wretch’ < the Germanic base of arm adj. + the Germanic base of -ing suffix3.The α. forms show i-mutation of the stem vowel caused by the i of the suffix; the β. forms either represent a by-form without mutation or show the analogical influence of arm adj. It is unclear whether Old English (Kentish) eorming shows a form with or without mutation (i.e. a spelling of earming or yrming ); compare eorm at arm adj. and n.2 Forms, and similar forms at ermth n. In the following quotation, the form armine occurs in the speech of a character who pretends to be Dutch. It appears to show a pun on the name of the actor Robert Armin (who in the play in question played the part of Matthew Flowerdale (‘Flo.’)) and Dutch arm, rather than showing any continuity with (or awareness of) the earlier English word:1605 London Prodigall 122 O here God, so young an armine! Flo. Armine, sweetheart, I know not what you mean by that, but I am almost a beggar.
Obsolete.
A poor or miserable creature; a wretch. Also attributive.
