Etymology: German, = ‘experience, occurrence’, < German erleben to experience; a term associated in this sense with the German philosopher Wilhelm Dilthey (1833–1911).
Philosophy.
A conscious, ‘lived-through’ experience; the experience itself rather than the content or memory of it. Also transferred.
