(The name of) a trans-Neptunian dwarf planet orbiting the sun, mostly beyond the orbit of Pluto, and having a mass greater than that of Pluto.Eris, the ninth most massive object currently known to orbit the sun, was discovered in 2005 by a team of astronomers led by Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology. The discovery was one of the main factors leading to the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet. ΚΠ 2006 Sci.
