Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin enterocēlē.
Etymology: < classical Latin enterocēlē intestinal hernia < Hellenistic Greek ἐντεροκήλη intestinal hernia, rupture < ancient Greek ἔντερον intestine (see enteron n.) + κήλη tumour (see -cele comb. form).Compare the following earlier occurrence of the Latin noun (in form enterocela) in an English context:1547 A. Borde Breuiary of Helthe i. f. cxvi. Enterocela is whan the guttes do fal out of the bely into the cod where the stones lie.
Surgery.
Herniation or prolapse of a segment of intestine; (in later use) esp. prolapse of intestine into the rectouterine pouch; an instance or case of this.
