Etymology: < en- prefix1 + stress v.In quot. c1425 translating Anglo-Norman enquilé ‘pursued’ (late 12th cent. in this sense), variant (with specific semantic development) of accueilli, past participle of accueillir to gather, to assemble (see accoil v.).
Obsolete.
transitive. To subject (a person or animal) to stress or strain.In quot. c1425: to pursue (an animal) in a hunt.
