Etymology: < Anglo-Norman amite , Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French amit (late 12th cent.) < classical Latin amictus amict n. Compare post-classical Latin amitus , amita (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources, after Anglo-Norman). Compare amict n., amice n.1 With sense 2 compare also amice n.2 and discussion at amice n.1The form namet (see β. forms) shows metanalysis (see N n.).

a. Christian Church. A liturgical vestment consisting of an oblong piece of white linen covering the neck and shoulders (occasionally also the head) and typically worn over the alb; = amice n.1 2a.
