März 1872 129, the source reviewed in quot. 1874; now Epizentrum ) < Epi- epi- prefix + Centrum centrum n. Compare Hellenistic Greek ἐπίκεντρος (in astronomy) occupying a cardinal point. The point on the earth's surface that overlies the subterranean focus of an earthquake; = epicentre n. 1.
