Etymology: < post-classical Latin epicedium (1502 or earlier), variant of classical Latin epicēdīon funeral ode < Hellenistic Greek ἐπικήδειον funeral ode, use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek ἐπικήδειος of or at a burial or funeral < ἐπι- epi- prefix + κῆδος care, especially funeral observance (see acedia n.) + -ειος , suffix forming adjectives. Compare earlier epicede n. and later epicedion n.

A funeral ode; a lament over a dead person. Also in figurative contexts.
