Etymology: < Spanish empanada (a1418), use as noun of feminine past participle of empanar to roll and bake or fry in pastry or dough (although the verb is apparently first attested later: 1529) < em- em- prefix + pan bread (see pan dulce n.). Compare Portuguese empanada (13th cent.).

Esp. in Spain and Latin America: a type of pastry turnover filled with a variety of savoury ingredients and baked or fried.In quot. 1866: (apparently) a large rectangular version of this.
