Etymology: < the name of Bruce Nathan Ames (b. 1928), U.S. biochemist, who developed the test (subsequently described by him and other authors in a series of papers from 1971–5).

Used as a modifier. Designating a method of screening chemicals for potential carcinogenicity by testing their ability to cause mutations in bacteria (esp. in Ames test); relating to or determined by such testing.The Ames test is typically performed using a salmonella strain with a precise nutrient requirement that can be altered by mutation, and is carried out in the presence of enzymes isolated from mammalian liver, to mimic the activation and metabolism of chemicals which occurs in vivo.
