Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: a- prefix6, Greek μεριστός , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < a- prefix6 + ancient Greek μεριστός divided, divisible (see meristic adj.) + -ic suffix. In sense 1 after meristem n. In sense 2 after German ameristisch (K. Prantl 1878, in Flora 61 499); compare earlier meristem n.
1. Botany. Of a gametophyte of a fern: that lacks a meristem, and is capable of producing antheridia only. Contrasted with meristic adj. 3.

1911 Science 3 Feb. 192/1 Spores of the same species, which formed at first narrow ameristic plants bearing antheridia, subsequently developed heart-shaped proliferations at their apices bearing archegonia.
