Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Italian Americano; Spanish Americano; Portuguese Americano.
Etymology: In sense 1 partly < Italian Americano, partly < Spanish Americano, and partly < Portuguese Americano, all originally in sense ‘American’ (see American n. and adj.). In sense 2 < Italian Americano (1908 in this sense).The cocktail of sense 2 was invented in Italy in the 1860s, but was originally named Milano-Torino after the respective origins of its main ingredients.
