Etymology: < post-classical Latin embryologia (1732 (in a work title) or earlier) < embryo embryo n. + -logia -logy comb. form. Compare French embryologie (1762 or earlier).

1. The branch of science concerned with the study of the formation and development of the human, animal, or plant embryo (or fetus), and (in later use) with the practical application of this, esp. in assisted reproductive technology and biotechnology.
