Etymology: modern Latin, < Old Provençal endurar to fast, endure.
A practice among the Cathari, in which those who have received the consolamentum undergo physical privations, frequently resulting in death, in order to prevent recontamination of the soul.

1887 H. C. Lea Hist. Inquisition Middle Ages I. iii. 95 When this heretication occurred on the death-bed, it was commonly followed by the ‘Endura’ or ‘privation’.
1922 H. J. Warner Albigensian Heresy iv. 85 Every inducement was now made to the sick man to end his life by any means other than by direct violence. He was urged to undergo the Endura, which took various forms.
1961 P. Green tr. Z. Oldenbourg Massacre at Montségur ii. 51 Certain perfecti were so passionately addicted to extreme fasting that they incurred the charge of wanting to put an end to their own lives. This is the explanation behind the legend of the endura, or voluntary death by starvation.
