Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ambiens.
Etymology: < scientific Latin ambiens (C. J. Sundevall 1851, in Förhandl. Skand. Naturf.), use as noun (short for musculus ambiens ) of classical Latin ambient- , ambiēns , present participle of ambīre to go about (see ambient adj.). The muscle is so called on account of the way in which it winds in passing from the pelvis to the foot.
Zoology.
In certain birds: a muscle in the upper leg that is connected by tendons to a muscle that bends the toes, such that bending of the legs on perching causes the toes to grip the perch. More fully ambiens muscle.
