单词 ambience
释义

ambiencen.

Brit. /ˈambɪəns/, /ˈɒmbɪɒns/, /ˈɒ̃bɪɒ̃s/, U.S. /ˈæmbiəns/, /ˈæmbjəns/, /ˈɑmbiˌɑns/, /ˌɑmbiˈɑns/
Forms: 1600s 1800s– ambience, 1900s– ambiance (nonstandard except in sense 2).
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Formed within English, by derivation. Probably also partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: ambient adj., -ence suffix; French ambiance.
Etymology: < ambient adj. (see -ence suffix). In senses ‘environment, surroundings, atmosphere’ and ‘acoustic quality of a particular environment, as reproduced in a recording’ partly after French ambiance environment, surroundings, atmosphere (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1883 or earlier, apparently earliest in a fine arts context), acoustic quality of a particular environment, as reproduced in a recording (1934). In sense 2, which is not fully naturalized in English, probably partly an independent borrowing < French ambiance (1883 or earlier in this sense; < ambiant ambient adj.: see -ance -ance suffix). Compare ambiente n., and also circumambience n.
1. Environment, surroundings; atmosphere, esp. of a pleasant or appealing nature. Frequently (esp. in later use): the mood, character, or atmosphere of a particular place.
